It’s hard to believe that we’re more than halfway through August already. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve heard “It’ll be Christmas soon!” from various people. Time flies.
I’ve even heard myself mutter “It’ll be September soon - the kids will be back at school!” as though the people around me aren’t aware of how time works and have never seen a calendar.
It’s even worse when I mutter that line to a parent who has kids on school holidays at the moment - Like they aren’t going to know exactly how many weeks, days and hours are left before the little darlings go back.
Personally, I enter the September 2017 term as a father of kids who are all at senior school and above. My youngest, Chance, moves into year 7 in a couple of weeks and I finally say goodbye to the infant and junior schools that my kids have attended since Charisma, my eldest, started 12 or so years ago.
Next week Charisma will be picking up her GCSE results. In two weeks time my middle daughter, Aaliyah, starts her final GCSE year and my youngest, Brooke, starts year 9 where she will be choosing her options for GCSEs. Time flies.
I always look back to myself when I was their age. Brooke, Aaliyah and Charisma all have an idea of what they want to do. Compared to me, I never knew what I wanted in life. In fact, it’s only in the past few years that I’ve found my feet doing something I really enjoy.
The fact that the three girls know what direction they want to take their lives amazes me and makes me proud of them. They are more focused on their future than I have ever been.
It won’t be long until Chance joins them and starts treading his own path in life.
As for me, I’ll just sit here and reflect from time to time. Like now.
I’m lucky to have such great kids and though I’d never want to slow the passage of time, I’ll always be surprised by how quickly things happen.
