Ultimate Warrior RIP

It’s said that in life, only two things are certain. Death and taxes. Neither are particularly welcomed, but it’s the former that can shock most, as the sudden passing of the Ultimate Warrior is testament to this.

Hot on the heels of Peaches Geldof’s sudden passing aged just 25 earlier this week, the news that the WWE’s newest Hall of Famer, the Ultimate Warrior, passed away today was just as shocking for me. It’s not unusual to see a former wrestler pass away at a young age. A simple look at the WWE roster from the 1990s will prove that, with the likes of Earthquake, Mr Perfect and Ravishing Rick Rude all gone.

But the thing that makes the passing of Ultimate Warrior so unexpected is that he was inducted into the Hall of Fame on Saturday, appeared at Wrestlemania on Sunday and again at Raw on Monday. Some are saying that his speech at Raw was a suicide note of sorts, though I suspect that is just macabre reflection. Jim Hellwig - as he known before adopting the Warrior moniker - apparently collapsed whilst walking to the car with his wife, which is far removed from a suicidal incident as you could get.

Whatever the reason for his death, it once again casts the spotlight on the untimely passing of so many performers within the wrestling business. Aged only 54, RIP Ultimate Warrior.
